We are cooking some awesome dinners in September and October. September 18th there will be a Mexican Surprise by the WOTM with a 50/50 draw.

Thanks to Mark, Troy, and Waterman for setting up the BBQ and Marlene, Henrietta and Pat Sutton for serving and setting up the food at the Luau. Linda did an awesome job with the raffle prizes and coordinating the entertainment.

We are looking for donations of woman's clothes for our men to model at our fashion show on October 9th.

We also need food donations for the breakfast burritos for the Relay for Life. Please check the board by the bar for what we need donated.

Let's support our lodge, seniors at Moosehaven and our kids at Mooseheart.

Our last official camp-out weekend is coming up on Labor Day, so please respect others and after all the fun is over, make sure you clean up.

Dano actually threw a ringer in the single horseshoes throw, swished the bean bag one toss, had an excellent bocce roll, and bowled a strike in the one frame of video bowling! He then topped it all off by outsmarting Sandals in Rochambeau; going with Scissors against his Paper!! That was some flawless play by Dano - good stuff!

Sandals also played very well - wearing a cape and hat that Kimmy had made him special (in an effort to intimidate Dano) - Sandals hit the best number in the dart throw (20), had a very nice lag pitching quarters, won at pool, and in ship captain crew he qualified and got a 7 all in one roll!

Overall, it was very close - congratulations to both competitors on a well fought out match: however, July Kelly Cup bragging rights definitely belong to Dano!

Please, if you choose to use the pool, remember the rules that the lodge has in place, and please clean-up after yourself. If you campout, remember your neighbors, and after the campout weekend is over, you must remove all trailers and RV's or you will be subject to a $10 a day storage fee. Also remember when it's a campout weekend and the lodge is closed, this does not mean the rules do not apply. 4th of July weekend we have a campout happening, and July 2nd and 3rd we have live entertainment and dinners and breakfasts planned for most days. So come out for the fun.

I would like to welcome our new Sweetheart of the lodge Kelly O'Dell crowned on Saturday June 19th. Those of you that came out for the Sweetheart Ball, thank you, and the Surf Rockets played great as always.

Easter is coming and the children's party is Saturday the 3rd.

There is a sign up sheet for kids and grand kids near the shuffleboard table in the social quarters.

There will be fun and games for all ages and of course the famous Easter egg hunt in our huge picnic area!

So far we have 40+ kids signed up - the more the better so be sure and stop by for some fun

Homelessness affects all of us and solving homelessness will take a collective effort of individuals, businesses, service clubs, non-profit organizations, the faith community, and government working together.

Those who are at risk of homelessness are our friends, our neighbors, or co-workers, and our associates.

Steps to Reduce and Prevent Homelessness

Share your strengths - Identify resources that you, your organization, or your business can offer to help the homeless or those who are at risk of homelessness (such as services, material goods, or expertize). Contact local service providers, congregations, or non-profits to match your strengths with community needs.

Contribute to a fund to provide rental assistance - Provide assistance to those at risk of homelessness through emergency shelter, hotel vouchers, and rental assistance. Your contribution can provide families or individuals with emergency shelter, help them to obtain permanent housing, or help to avoid eviction.

Conduct food drives - Local food banks such as Simi Valley's Care and Share (805-522-5676) are in serious need of contributions to meet increased demands. Help provide food to struggling families by donating food or conducting a canned food drive, especially outside of the peak food donation months of November and December.

Provide for transportation - Buss passes are needed to provide transportation to and from employment opportunities, health care appointments, dinner sites, PADS sites, or other services. A book of 42 bus passes may be purchased for $40 and donated to the Samaritan Center. Transportation fund donated to the Samaritan Center can also help pay for auto repair costs to help keep family members employed or reunited homeless individuals with their families in other areas.

Volunteer - Volunteer to work to reduce and eliminate homelessness within the community by contributing your time to organizations such as the Samaritan Center, Free Clinic of Simi Valley, Salvation Army, or Care and Share.

Educate - Provide learning opportunities for your organization or business to understand the most effective ways to assist the homeless and those at risk of homelessness and to dispel misconceptions about homelessness.

Employ - Assist the homeless by offering job and training opportunities in you business or organization.

A Call to Action

The Simi Valley Task Force on Homelessness has adopted a goal of working to reduce homelessness by 10% annually.

According to a recent street count there are and estimated 300 homeless individuals in Simi Valley.

43% of the homeless counted in Simi Valley are women and children.

Homelessness... Myths and Truths

Truth: Supporting services for the homeless will contribute to ending the problem; giving money to panhandlers only maintains the problem.

Myth: The homeless that we see on the streets represent how many are homeless in Simi Valley.

Truth: For every person that is visibly homeless, there are many more that are at risk of becoming homeless, or homeless at some time throughout the year.

Myth: It is too expensive to help people obtain or stay in housing.

Truth: It is much more cost effective to help a person stay in housing or obtain housing than it is to pay for the services used by a person who is already homeless.

Well, it's that time of the month again.

I would like to congratulate Ms. Kelly O'Dell our new Sweetheart of the Year!

On March 6th Sharon, Tina, and Karen will be making homemade Lasagna. On the 13th we will be having St. Patrick's Day dinner and dance, wear the green and bring the blarney down. The 20th the WOTM are putting on a Pork Loin dinner , so come down and enjoy some great meals and fun!

The LOOM will be having our first nominating committee meeting on the 9th of March.

This will take EXTRA money not in the budget, so fund raising is paramount. The picnic area needs a new sprinkler system and a new lawn. The A-Frame is in terrible shape and needs a complete renovation. The pool area and pool area bathrooms are in poor condition and in need of a lot of repairs. Our social quarters and backroom need new heating and air conditioning units. We would like to stucco the exterior of the building to improve curb appeal.

I am currently in the process of putting together costs for materials for all repairs. When complete I will start a campaign to solicit outside donations for the cost of the repairs. Some of our ideas are: Sanctioned Chili Cook-Off, Car Show, Weddings in the Park, Weddings in the Chapel (A-Frame), summer child care, Cinco de Mayo Celebration. I am also dealing with a gentleman to set up a summer concert series that would run April through September, once a month. I am talking with a group that puts on free-style bicycle shows. All your ideas are welcome and when presented will be seriously considered by the board. All volunteers are welcome to help in a variety of ways, just ask! Anyone with construction or landscaping experience will be needed. You can help tremendously by bringing in new members!

I still can't thank all who have done what they can to help the lodge stay open and continue to be a viable part of this fine fraternity. For those of you that made it to our last "town hall" meeting I gave an update on our financial and loan status. I was pleased to announce that thanks to everyone's hard work and financial help, we will be here for a while and WE WILL HAVE A NEW YEARS EVE PARTY.

Here are a few of the dates that are coming up; on October 3rd we are having a Legion Breakfast and Celebration, followed by a great picnic with food and lots of fun. Later in the evening we will be hosting a joint function by the WOTM and LOOM, a fashion show with the LOOM wearing the latest fashions, don't miss this one. On October 10th - 11th is the Relay for Life at Royal High School, don't forget we still need donations for the breakfast burritos we donate to the team walkers. On October 17th is the Youth Awareness Conference here at our lodge, please bring down your youths for this event. On October 24th is the adult Halloween Party, and on October 25th is the District Breakfast, also on October 25th is the Kids Halloween Party. We will be having the Haunted House Tours October 29th -31st and we will be asking a $5.00 donation, it was great last year and will be even better this year!

There are of course the regular meal nights, but of late, we have had some very fine meals prepared. Often these dinners will have some very fine meals prepared. Often these dinners will have some sort of music provided for your added enjoyment. A special thanks foes out to Kimmy, who in her on going quest for the betterment of the lodge, has done several dinners this past month all with much success. We are honored to have with us last month, the WOTM from San Fernando Lodge who came in and did a Friday dinner for our lodge, along with a 50/50 draw and presented $644.00 to save the lodge fund, thank you San Fernando WOTM.

All of our cooks are volunteers, and could always use a helping hand, so feel free to offer up one of your own favorites some evening, I know they could use a rest they all deserve a big thanks. I have already given you an update of the lodge status elsewhere in this newsletter, but you can never say thank you enough, for what you have been able to accomplish, you are all amazing. I wish to thank Fingers and company, for helping to make the grounds look especially nice for a very special day for me, and his continued help in maintaining the property.

Kimmy has done an outstanding job on the newsletter, it isn't easy getting everybody to prepare their letters, and calendar information in a timely manner to prepare for the printers, her patience is appreciated. Thank you everyone for all that you do and please don't stop.

We are working on donations for materials, hoping we can put together the labor. All the facility repairs are going to be scheduled to accommodate beter events for more revenue streams. We will soon have sign up sheets behind the bar, so you can give us your contact information.

The membership drive is also very important. We need new blood and younger blood, to carry on our traditions. There is no better time than now, with our tough economic times, to push Membership.

There are many people looking for alternative ideas for entertainment, such as a night out, including an affordable dinner, followed by a night enjoying a live band. What better way than to spend it than at your local moose lodge with family and friends. So talk with your neighbors, family, co-workers and friends, to let them know about the Moose. Invite them as your guest to have dinner on a Friday or Saturday night, or the next time we have a band scheduled.

Our Western Night was a lot of fun, and the rib dinner was great, we had a lot of fun in the kitchen preparing it all. We are always looking for new faces in the kitchen, and at our functions.

It's always nice to acknowledge those who go that little bit extra, so as to make things nice for everyone. I'm sure I will forget someone and if I do, please somebody let me know and I will correct it next month....

I would like to thank Kimmy for the terrific job on the newsletter, and what about those pork chops. Betty and Fingers on the pool area, our weekly cooks that keep our food tradition going, Jerry for the maintenance/upkeep around the lodge.. how about those planters. Rich Hodge for his work on the lodge website, more info to come, as this progresses, Thank you all.

Your lodge was well represented at Reseda for the District Sweetheart Ball, Brown Sr. escorted Kimmy in, as the new Sweetheart and Dano escorted Marlene, as out going Sweetheart, they all clean up pretty nice.

The new Moose International Membership Campaign poster is up, as is the quota for the LOOM. This year's quota is 41 and we already have 6 so far, as you know, we made our quota for last year.

There presently exists, two opening on the LOOM Board, those brothers interested in running for either Prelate or Trustee, may submit an intent form available at the bar, to the nominating committee. Any brother in good standing with this lodge may apply. We also have nominating forms if you feel on of our brothers is worthy of the position, and with to nominate them, these are available at the bar.

A quick note about Sunday hours of operation, of the social quarters, effective Sunday June 28, 2009, the social quarter's hours will be 11am to 9pm exceptions will be on camp out weekends and breakfasts.

In last month's newsletter, I mentioned an idea to help stimulate our day to day operation. No date has been set for our first ever town hall meeting, the board and I are working out the details and compiling information to present to the membership. As soon as a date is confirmed, you will be advised by a direct mailer as to when and where. My apologies to those that showed up last month because of erroneous information, thank you for your enthusiasm and interest.

And on a happier note, I would like to congratulate Brother Gary Brown Sr. on his nomination and appointment, to the Executive Board of the James B. West District 15 Office of Prelate.

I know our economy has had a negative effect on many of you this past year and OUR lodge has felt the impact as well. This next year is going to be as challenging as the last year, if not more. I assure you the new board of Officers has yours, and the lodge's best interests at heart, and have already started talking about some of the things we are going to need to do, to try and be successful this next year.

Let me ask for just a couple things if I may,m first and foremost, I ask that we all take a moment to remember why our became a Member for the Moose. Second, if you answered the first question correctly, I ask that you get involved with the lodge and do your part to help us survive our current economic storm. The bottom line is, we only have about 10-15% of our total Members that actually contribute to the lodge by hosting lodge events, and frankly it's just not enough to keep our boat a float.

So PLEASE talk to your Sr. Regent (Marlene) and your Governor (Brown) and find our what you can personally do to help our children at Moose Heart, our Seniors at Moose Heaven, and support OUR lodge beyond all expectations. Again, thank you for your support; I look forward to seeing you at the lodge.

Thank you Wally for collecting for the band "GREAT JOB AS USUAL." Everyone had a great time! But most of all Thank you, Spunky, Laura, Michele, Marlene, Sue, Beans, and everyone else who helped out with the food, it was a great buffet. Also Tom Beaven won the Raffle basket, YEAH!
